Sam Jarrett
Best Male Presenter of the Year
Sam Jarrett is a multi talented member of Fly FM as demonstrated by his involvement over the past year. A presenter, he is professional in everything he does whilst maintaining the fun element of student radio. Head of Speech and Download, he demonstrates the ability to manage a team of editors. Station voice, his voice would regularly be used in a diverse range of jingles and adverts. Production, he played a key part in pre produced top of the hour jingles and adverts. All these elements of Sam Jarrett’s involvement this year make him an outstanding asset to the station.
Sam was expected to play a large role in the output of the station after the current station manager spotted his presenting talent towards the end of Fly’s last academic year. His charismatic style of presenting, refusing to play it safe and take risks, made him the ideal figurehead of Tuesday’s Off the Record. His relationship with the listener involving Trent in as many of his links showed great awareness of what was expected from a daytime presenter on the station.
In the first term Sam became increasingly involved in the station’s operations on air by covering any daytime show along with occasionally standing in as a newsreader due to his credentials as a third year Broadcast Journalism student at Nottingham Trent. His air of confidence in projection made him valuable to the station. Off air Sam was becoming increasingly eager to help create a sound that the current Fly committee were striving for. By November Sam was inducted to the Fly FM committee as head of Speech and Download.
Christmas saw a number of changes to Fly FM and a complete rebrand of Off the Record. However Sam was one of those kept on as presenter due to projecting the right style and sound the show needed. His Tuesday show became popular with the introduction of risky features such as the student radio takeover where Sam would ring rival student radio stations up and down the country and pose as an innocent caller. He’d then fire out Fly FM jingles spreading the word across the UK...Fly FM, New Music For Britain’s Coolest Uni!
Sam stepped up his game in 2009 by pushing forward his love for Electro and Dub step by fusing the two together along with a mix of overseas influences on his evening show The Mixtape as well as continuing Off the Record. This show gave Sam the ability to do what he loved most, delivering new music that you will hear first on his show then in Nottingham nightclubs weeks later. The best example of this was Sam championing Calvin Harris – I’m Not Alone in January. This ability to switch from daytime to evening took a degree of getting used to but was by no means noticeable that he was a novice to such a show.
Wider involvement included the All Nighter where Fly broadcasted between 7pm and 11am with a team of presenters. Helping out with Fly’s coverage of the countdown to Christmas, Easter, end of year and graduation ball. This list is endless and that just shows the dedication this man has given to Fly in a crucial year of his University life.
